Mogherini strategy in the crisis in the Mediterranean.- Cristina Casabón

A number of threats and mutations in the region make a renewed European strategy in the Euro-Mediterranean region an absolute necessity. This situation requires a political strategy with a strong security dimension that addresses the root causes of the conflicts that are putting into question the geopolitical order and the borders of the Middle East.

Firstly, the analysis addresses the responsibility of Member States when promoting a regional foreign policy with a security dimension. The EU and its Member States should identify the best Euro-Mediterranean instruments and policies and study how they should be coordinated within the framework of a European Global Strategy.

The geopolitical situation in the Middle East is very fluid and complex. It is difficult to establish a new regional architecture while a new order is still in the making. Based on the identification of these limitations, it is concluded that the EU is an actor capable of providing peace and security while solving the roots of its regional crisis.

The purpose of this analysis is to reach a shared vision of the innovative concept of a political strategy with a strong security component; a "new vision of security" that accompanies the political resolution of conflicts while it´s coordinated with other socio-economic policies.

A security architecture in the Mediterranean requires addressing the lack of European political influence. Therefore, the EU should pursue their own agenda, implementing the right policies and instruments in the framework of a European Global Strategy.
