The attacks in Casablance 2003: a turning point in jihadism Moroccan.- Ignacio Fuente Cobo

The attacks in Casablanca on May 16, 2003, changed the political landscape of Morocco and its attitude in the fight against jihadist terrorism ending the illusion of Moroccan exceptionality to the terrorist threat and its consideration as a bulwark against fundamentalism. This reassuring story was based on the condition of the king as Commander of the Faithful rising above the demands and disputes between the various sectors of Moroccan Islamism, something that so far had seemed a fortress, but that also carried the symptoms of his own weakness. In the Casablanca bombings this fragility was tangibly shown when some of these sectors questioned both, the religious and political legitimacy of the Moroccan monarchy. The chain of trust social stability depended on was irretrievably broken which posed the dilemma of the  monarchy´s ability to manage the security risks while performing a safe political transition. Thereafter and as a sign of this new awareness, security became foremost, the main concern of the Moroccan authorities.
