History and international experience has shown how, if regional powers are successful, they create various benefits for the countries of their region. And otherwise, in the event of failure, there is a reverberation in neighbouring countries. And that is especially the case in Sub-Saharan Africa, where young democracies are more susceptible to contagion of both good and bad praxis from hegemonic powers in both regional and global contexts. This paper examines those countries that illustrate best the importance of regional swing states for the success of their region and the continent’s: Kenia, Nigeria and South Africa.
