Geopolitics has been one of the most widely used approaches to the study of Russia’s foreign policy. The ideas of authors such as Halford Mackinder or George Kennan are still present in different forms in the public debate, although they are often decontextualized from the historical moment in which they were proposed. On the other hand, since the Russian annexation of Crimea, some analyses carried out in the West have used similar arguments to justify the purported existence of a "new Cold War". However, it is necessary to adopt a broader framework of analysis in order to overcome the historical and geographical determinism of classical Geopolitics.
