Analysis of the effectiveness of US sanctions and the EU to Russia (2014-2017).- Jorge Mestre Jordá

This article critically analyses the role of the sanctions that since 2014 have been applied to Russia by, principally, the US and the EU. The argument that is defended and demonstrated is that so-called "selective" sanctions and trade sanctions have not only been effective in their attempts to coerce, restrain or stigmatise Russia but they have had a "boomerang" effect on Western interests. This has indeed been the case from a more assertive Russian foreign policy throughout the de facto annexation of Crimea or the continuity of the conflict in Ukraine and the accusations of interference in electoral processes. This research introduces a novelty in the investigations about selective sanctions by employing the Giumelli's multipurpose framework proposed which up to now had been used to study UN sanctions.
