The United Arab Emirates, at the forefront of the remaking of the Middle East.-Itxaso Domínguez Olazábal

About to celebrate its fifth decade of existence and with most of the international attention focused on neighbor and ally Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) deserves increased attention. The country is shaping up to be one of the key players in the remaking of both the Arabian Gulf and the Middle East as a whole after, and as a consequence of, the so called post-”Arab Spring” scenario. The small federation is an autocratic regime that guarantees the contentment of its citizenry by an affluent welfare system still fueled by its oil boon. The UAE has managed to craft and maintain an image as a financial and military power, while presenting a model of economic diversification, diplomatic expertise, relative tolerance and modernity the neighborhood could follow the steps of. The evolution and current state of affairs of the country's foreign policy calls for a comprehensive analysis that sheds light on its pillars and nuances.
