The autonomous submarine vehicle of the Spanish Navy.- Augusto Conte de los Ríos

The birth of the submarine changed the theatre of naval operations. We just have to remember the feat by the German Otto Weddigen and the U-9 against the British cruisers Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy, three modern units sunk by a fragile, small submarine. Narciso Monturiol used to say that of all the known arts, navigation under water was, undoubtedly, the most difficult and risky endeavour that man could undertake. The developments in technology allow us to combine both ideas, the power and discretion of the submarine with the advances in robotics and autonomous systems. Thanks to the analysis of the academic production of the Web of Science in the last decade, the patents registered in that period and the study of the current underwater autonomous vehicles, we will put forward which the optimal vehicle for the Spanish Navy is. Spain is about to conclude her biggest project, the S-80 submarine, and it is necessary to think about the next jump. This article aims to shed light on such a complex issue.
