Drug trafficking in the Campo de Gibraltar area awakes growing concerns among citizens and authorities, as well as the media interest. The area presents a series of geographic and socio-economic circumstances that work as facilitating factors for the development of illegal activities by organized criminal networks or groups. Actually, this Andalusian region is crossed by three trafficking routes, the Moroccan cannabis resin route (hachís), the Colombian cocaine route through the Algeciras international port and the tobacco smuggling route, since tobacco smuggling is a traditional illegal activity in the area. This confluence arises the question of the probability for the area to become an international drug trafficking hub, and suggests the necessity of tacking further steps to hinder its eventual consolidation.
