Balmis: The expedition (19th century) and the operation (21st century).- Blanca Palacián de Inza.

The Spanish Ministry of Defence names its operation against the coronavirus with the surname of the Alicante physician Francisco Javier Balmis (1753-1819), the military man who led an expedition that saved the population of the New World and the Philippines, overseas territories of the Spanish Empire of the early nineteenth century, of the terrible disease of smallpox. Thanks to this little-known feat, smallpox is the only eradicated human disease.
