The jihadist phenomenon in Morocco: from its origins to the attacks in Casablanca in 2003 (DIEEEA38-2016)

Moroccan involvement in most of the major jihadist attacks in the world over the past two years has tarnished the image of Morocco as a moderate monarchy in process of democratization. Although the traditional form of Islam practiced in the kingdom is far from the most radical vision favored by jihadist groups, the increasing involvement of citizens of Moroccan origin in international terrorism´s networks is worrying. While the international context provides an explanation are the internal policies of Morocco and its own social contradictions that mainly explain the roots of the problem. It is therefore necessary to study the jihadist phenomenon in the Alawite kingdom from its origins as the best way to understand why has it reached the current situation and what are the guidelines Moroccan jihadism might follow the in the future.
