North American commitments to Japan and Korea remain, debates change (DIEEEA21-2017)

The Republican candidate during the presidential campaign had raised concerns in Japan and South Korea in announcing the possible withdrawal of US forces and their nuclear warheads. Since the inauguration of President Donald Trump, steps have been taken to ensure the survival of fundamental commitments and to dispel fears. However, the political class and the Japanese and South Korean public opinion will have to open a new and wider debate about their security and defense. The pressure of the shared threat posed by ballistic missiles and North Korea's nuclear program reinforces the cohesion of bilateral alliances, boosting the need for a trilateral agreement between the United States, Japan and South Korea. The new US relations with China are the key to reducing the level of tension with North Korea.
