Islam and democracy building processes in the Sahel.-Juan Ignacio Castien Maestro

Almost all the States in the Sahel are now democracies despite their imperfections. But the consolidation of a democratic system demands the establishment of a democratic culture along with a devoloped civil society. Furthermore, the Sahelian population is predominantly Muslim. That is why the progress in democracy building in this region must be necessarily linked with a modern and moderate version of Islam. This version must compete with other rivals such as Salafism, including its jihadist version, the most conservative Islamism and other conservative forms of Sufism. Its success will also hinge on the achievement of a genuine social and economic modernisation. A policy with strategic perspective on the part of the developed world must promote this modernisation as well as supporting all those political and religious forces that prove to be more moderate and progressive.
