Climate change and the risks associated with Mediterranean habitat and North African hemisphere (DIEEEO69-2012)

As international science has revealed, the complex phenomena of climate change holds potentially serious implications for international security. This article focus on the main possible risks derived from climate change in the Mediterranean zone, putting special attention in Spain, and those risks in the vast zone of the North African hemisphere. Climate change has being well defined as a threat multiplier: the combination of the effects of climate change with some adverse circumstances –poverty, reduced water supply, changes in sea level, migrations, fragility of public basic structures…- may drive with great probability to a multidimensional conflict. The challenge of climate change to human societies is enormous, but it opens also a world of opportunities to cope with it.
