Mali: Deep reasons of the conflict Sahel (DIEEEO89-2012)

Mali´s government has lost control of the north of the country, now in the hands of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and its jihadi allies. This paper uses history in order to show that it is not the first time that islamic fundamentalism takes hold of the region. Different peoples coexist in an area with a fertile past that to this day defines the way of life of each community, how it practices Islam and its links to criminality. As the conflict has intensified, a series of armed groups have emerged that enlist combatants from each ethnicity. This analysis aspires to be a useful multidisciplinary that facilitates the work of decision makers and enlightens interested readers on a area of great strategic and symbolic importance within Subsaharan Africa.
