The Strait of Hormuz and the aggressive deterrence strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran (DIEEEO01-2013)

Since long ago the Islamic Republic has followed an ambitious strategy by means of an inexhaustible use of threat, something intended to break through the containment system imposed by Washington that prevents Teheran from achieving its strategic goal of becoming the Middle East’s hegemon. This strategy could be dubbed as of "aggressive deterrence", and for the past months its focus has been freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Though the credibility of the Tehran’s threat is uncertain, because of its limited military capabilities, and a potential American backlash to an Iranian military raid could result in a critical risk for the survival of the Islamic Republic.
