2013 Presidential Elections in Mali: The difficult challenge of restoring democracy after the conflict (DIEEEO102-2013)

After more than a year and a half of political instability in the south and conflict in the north, on July 28 and August 11 this year, Mali held presidential elections throughout the country, with voters electing Ibrahim Boubacar Keita as President for the next five years. The elections were a milestone in the democratic history of the country. The numerous difficulties arising from the effects of the conflict did not prevent transparent elections with a record voter turnout. While many organizational flaws were detected, these did not mar the peaceful and credible electoral process. This paper aims to review the presidential elections from the point of view of an in-situ electoral observation.
