Niger: The country's uranium resists jihadism (DIEEEO33-2013)

Since northern Mali’s takeover by jihadist forces, many have warned that Niger would follow; the weakest link in the chain of sahelian countries threatened by AQIM and affiliated groups. Being one of the poorest countries in the world, surrounded by focal points of instability in Mali, Libya and Nigeria, and having suffered a tuareg rebellion a few years ago, this prediction is understandable. However, Niger has demonstrated a remarkable political and military capability to maintain itself clear from jihadist insurgency and state break down. Not without external help, with an interest in maintaining Niger pacified due to its economic and energetic importance.
