On 1st November 2013, Hakeemullah Mehsud, the leader of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan was killed (TTP) in North Waziristan by a US drone strike. His death came at a moment when the Pakistani government was trying to establish a dialogue with the TTP in order to start a peace process, and few days after Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan’s prime minister, asked US President Barak Obama to put an end to the drone attacks, whilst on an official visit to Washington DC. This paper analyzes the circumstances of Hakeemullah’s killing as well as the consequences that it could have for Pakistan and the TTP.
