Australia: Geography, Interests and Strategy (DIEEEO42-2014)

The particular view of the world from Australia has produced a national strategic thinking that is based on those particular requirements arising from the geography of the island continent, an approach that is characterized by its permanence and stability from the very inception of the Commonwealth, in 1901. The strategic review process conducted in recent years confirms, once again, that the key factor in the permanence along the time of Australia's strategy is its unavoidable maritime geography, a condition on which it is supported its long-term validity, beyond those foreseeable changes in Canberra’s government that may occur. However, the consistency of Australian strategic vision stumbles, as in most of the developed nations of Western culture, at an insufficient funding for the military capabilities commensurate with the level of ambition that is projected by Australia’s strategy.
