Transmission time in the Link-16 (DIEEEO76-2014)

Until, approximately, no more than a quarter century, military communications in the theater of operations were reduced mainly to radio voice transmission. Although those systems are still in use, in the era of new technologies, it becomes necessary to have other communications, to ensure the transmission of data and to make more efficient use of the RF spectrum. Link systems are born in this way, of which, at present, the most powerful and greater use is Link-16. Transmission time is the Link-16 critic asset with more complicated management. It is divided into small slots using Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) techniques and allowing frequency hopping, which creates stacked transmission networks. The need to synchronize all nodes with Network Time References (NTR) function is added to the difficulty of managing the system. This management is very complicated, although the equipment is precise enough to maintain synchronization for hours once obtained. Finally, reception of some packets must be confirmed to ensure that this has been done successfully. A new era of communication tactics in the battlefield, whose limit is being updated every day, is open.
