Development of the Nuclear Armament of North Korea (DIEEEO78-2014)

During several years the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has manufactured short-range missiles and currently, medium range missiles. They are considered among the best missiles that can be acquired at optimal economic conditions.
From the beginning of its nuclear program, North Korea chose to develop plutonium atomic bombs since they are more compact than uranium atomic bombs and, therefore, appropriate for the use in a warhead.
This paper presents scientific and technical problems that North Korean physicists and engineers had to solve for the manufacturing of the plutonium atomic bombs. To do this, previously they had to analyze both the gun and implosion methods. For the production of the plutonium atomic bomb, North Korea conducted the techniques to design and develop the following components: detonators, conventional high explosive lenses, and partially resolve the complex metallurgy of plutonium.
