The theft of fuel in Mexico in the context of drug trafficking: an alternative way of financing (DIEEEO55-2016)

Fuel theft has soared in the last ten years coinciding with the beginning of the war against drug trafficking started by former President Felipe Calderón (Partido de Acción Nacional). This is not a matter of chance but an attempt by the cartels to diversify its funding sources, thereby increasing their resilience against police beatings. The company PEMEX has suffered multibillion-dollar losses for the last years, with no solution achieved at the moment. Far from improving the situation it gets worse and worse every day, affecting civil society with shortage.
