The impact of international terrorism in the tourism industry: review and prospects in the Mediterranean (DIEEEO76-2016)

International tourism has been solidified in the last few decades as one of the economic activities with the greatest potential and capacity for development on a global scale. Frequently associated with globalization, its growth, in terms of number of tourists, destinations, and varieties, has usually been interpreted as an indicator of good prospects for stability and security in the areas it develops. However, tourism is not an industry exempt from threats, and one that has been proven especially detrimental to its development is international terrorism, whose impact on the tourism sector tends to provoke dramatic socioeconomic effects in the affected area, country, or region. Unfortunately, several Mediterranean countries have been subjected to these effects. In past few years, they have experienced the injustice of terrorism within their borders, something that has had disastrous consequences in terms of the affluence of international tourists, which has resulted in setbacks for their respective economies.
