The "False Quranic Schools" and the tragedy of child exploitation in West and Central Africa (DIEEEO48-2017)

Since the progressive penetration of Islam to the south of the Sahara desert, the traditional Quranic schools have become a fundamental channel for spreading and teaching Muslim doctrine. However, the emancipation of colonial power, internal migrations to cities and the continuing economic crisis were changing these centers of religious formation in Central and Western Africa. Many of them have turned to "false Quranic schools" leaded by presumed teachers who, under the pretext and the usurpation of Islam, bring under their pupils to the most brutal abuses or allow them to be recruited by armed groups, including jihadist militias. The involvement of political power, religious leaders and civil society, together with a greater commitment from the international community, will be necessary to face this tragedy that not only affects directly hundreds of thousands of children, but also has repercussions on security and progress of this wide African region.
