DR Congo: the war against the Kamuina Nsapu, a symptom of the country's decomposition (DIEEEO63-2017)

Fighting between the Kamuina Nsapu’s traditional chef militia – killed in August - and the DRC's Armed and Security Forces have spread violence to Congo’s Kasai region and resulted in the deaths of at least 500 people in nine months, including two members of the UN Group of Experts for the DRC, killed in March. Although this militia emerged as an expression of local dissatisfaction with the Congolese regime, the discourse of this new armed group has gradually acquired a national dimension aligned with the objectives of the opposition to Joseph Kabila, a president who has clung to his post despite the end of his last constitutional term. The lack of legitimacy of the head of state and the non-implementation of the transition agreement signed with the opposition on 31 December have catalysed the conflict. This crisis threats to delay the hypothetical elections scheduled for the end of 2017.
