The forthcoming revision of Spanish Maritime Security Strategy: Potential Upgrades and Improving Options (DIEEEO23-2018)

The December 2017 National Security Strategy sets forth a series of measures aimed at strengthening the National Security System and improving the coordination and effectiveness of State action. For the first time in the short course of Spanish national strategy, the country has been recognized as a maritime power and this paves the way for crafting a national strategic position that is focused on the governance and use of global common spaces, to include the maritime domain. The new Strategy requires a revision of the December 2013 National Maritime Security Strategy, in which the National Maritime Security Council is to reflect relevant guidance. This task presents a magnificent opportunity to consolidate successful efforts so far and undertake changes that will ultimately enhance the National Security System and guarantee demanded national response capabilities in accordance with Spain's overarching vision.
