Charles Ghankay Taylor: First Head of State condemned by the International Criminal Court (DIEEEM17-2012)

Charles Ghankay Taylor, first Head of State indicted, tried and convicted by an international criminal tribunal since the Nürenberg trials in 1946.
The Special Court for Sierra Leone has unanimously convicted Charles Taylor the former President of Liberia for aiding and abetting RUF and AFCR rebels in the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity during Sierra Leone´s civil war to a single global sentence to a term of 50 years in prison.
The Trial Chamber found that as President of Liberia and as member of the CEOAE Committee of Five he abuse of position for aiding and abetting in the commission of crimes in Sierra Leone, which was an aggravating factor of great weight.
The Office of the Prosecutor and Charles Taylor both have appealed the judgment and the sentence.
