Trump's Call in Historical Perspective (DIEEEO40-2017)

In December, 2016, the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, called the president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) by telephone. That act provoked negative reactions from the Popular Republic of China, because it represents the breaking of the US foreign policy’s ‘One-China principle’. However, in February, Trump said he honours the principle as this pillar of the US international relations is solid. The Popular Republic was officially recognised by Washington after that the United States broke diplomatic relations with the Republic of China. This document analyses how this process was negotiated by the Nixon presidency, when the United States tried to link the opening to China and the withdrawal from Taiwan to a collaboration they expected from Beijín in pushing Hanoi to allow Washington to move to an ‘honourable withdrawal’ from the Vietnam War.
