Are not the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia disarmed? (DIEEEI08-2017)

On June 26, 2017, the United Nations mission in Colombia announced that the arms of the FARC-EP (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army) had been delivered. Immediately news agencies around the world and the media announced to the world in their headlines that the FARC-EP had disarmed.

However, the facts confirm that much remains to be done. Much of the FARC's arsenal remains hidden in the jungle. The government itself and the United Nations mission acknowledge that only 77 of the 949 FARC secret sites have intervened. It is even possible that the guerrilla organization still has anti-aircraft missiles.

The guerrilla dissidents who did not agree to join the peace process can be a destabilizing factor due to their presence in both Colombian territory and Venezuela.

But undoubtedly the most complicated and controversial issue will be the economic disarmament of a guerrilla group that for years has accumulated an immense fortune.
