Geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific: the military factor in the new China (DIEEEO59-2018)

The remarkable increase of the Chinese defense budget in the last decade and its unstoppable trade expansion, along with the Chinese occupation of the disputed maritime territories and the creation of new aircraft carriers, illustrate Chinese intention to exercise supremacy over the Indo-Pacific. Such an offensive policy has put the US on its guard, as their influence in the area has been damaged. China, the new emerging power, is challenging US dominance in the region, which the US is unwilling to give up. The fight for hegemony in the area leads both countries into a confrontation. It is a new case in which the Thucydides Trap will not only affect the future of a region, but the entire world.
