Since 2007, the Pakistani Taliban have operated as a powerful factor of destabilization in Pakistán and, to some extent, also in it neighbor country, Afghanistan. Moreover, its main and most belligerent force, Tehreek -e- Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has tried to promote terrorism outside Central Asia, supporting in that way the global jihad encouraged by it partner Al Qaeda. This paper addresses the pro-taliban movement In Pakistan, with special attention to the TTP. We review its origins, growth, ideology, goals, action areas, its insurgent and terrorist activity, the methods to mobilize human and financial resources and it links with other extremist forces within and outside Pakistan. Finally, we analyze and evaluate the counterinsurgent and counterterrorist strategies inplemented by the Pakistani authorities and concluding with a prospective reflection about the future.
