Keys political crisis and prospects for democratic transformation of the Republic of Macedonia (DIEEEO109-2016)

2016 is a key year in Macedonian politics, whose main purpose is to hold free elections and create a stable Government. Being one of the poorest countries in Europe, the Republic drags a profound political crisis which was triggered by an illegal wiretap scandal that has shown the elite’s abuses of power and corruption. This has led to a political impasse where there is a dominant party that pushes for maintaining of the status quo; a weak opposition that has proven incapable of catching enough support; an ethnical minority that demands recognition facing the Government’s nationalist rhetoric; and a civil society that, despite having started to mobilize, has no broad margins for action through democratic means. Additionally, the rise in the refugee influx has led Skopje to close its borders. European Union’s interest in maintaining this barrier is allowing the Macedonian Government to postpone the necessary democratic reforms.
