Short Sea Shipping, a European Strategy (DIEEEO70-2015)

The European Union has a new objective: carrying out a real strategy to rationalize the transport policy. The current transport system is, according to the European Union, unsustainable. The land transport like roads and especially railroads is being abused, leading to a high release of contaminant gases and, therefore, leading to a massive imbalance in terms of ecology. The Pyrenees or the Alps are good examples of strategic areas due to their sensitivity to floods, fires and snowfalls. It is also important to remark the use and abuse of limited resources like petrol. Altogether, Europe has decided to find a solution on this topic. This article will analyze a solution based on an intermodal system, which emphasizes maritime routes in general and Short Sea Shipping (SSS) in particular.
