On the roots of the Syrian problem: Part I, the crisis of nationalism (DIEEEA12-2017)

It is possible to identify certain generic factors that have affected the Syrian situation, such as the crisis and stigmatization of nationalism, the historical confrontation between nationalism and Islamism, and the influence of geopolitical actors with interests in the area. The dominant factor is the crisis of nationalism.

Nationalism in Syria has passed through various states from the pan-Syrian to the pan-Arab, to the Ba'ath party in both Syria and Iraq. Access to power through a coup d'etat of Hafez Al Assad introduces militarism, and is succeeded in a clear example of patrimonial transmission by his son Bashar, who breaks the delicate balances maintained by his father, giving rise to the current situation
