The 'symbols' and 'counter-symbols' of war: meaning and strategy of the offensive against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (DIEEEM02-2017)

The battle against the Islamic State, which in its military dimension we can exemplify in the offensives on the cities of Dabiq, Mosul and Raqa, is also and in a very specific way a war among "symbols" and "counter-symbols"; a war waged by an hermetic and closed view of Islam against a combination of diverse elements, not all Islamic, leaving behind the role of the West in a struggle whose deepest dimension we seem unable to understand.
