The discourse of the Islamic State: the populism of the Middle East (DIEEEO42-2017)

We are in the period of populisms. These political movements with specific features are emerging everywhere in all five continents. Meanwhile, the Islamic world is going through one of its most critical movements, with the appearance of the Islamic State (IS), which is wielding a version of Islam that has produced a wedge without comparison in the global muslim community. The aim of this article is to relate both events, trying to figure out if both are part of the same global phenomenon, linked to globalisation and to the crisis of the economic system. For that purpose I will use the theoretical tools provided by Laclau in his research on populism, using the discourse developed by the IS as fundamental object of analysis.
