Climate change is having particular impact in the Arctic area, with negative consequences for climate stability in the rest of the globe, and for the local habitat which supports traditional peoples and endangered species. But the retreat of the ice now allows operating in areas so far inaccessible, sparking new exploitation endeavours, both as source of riches and as trade routes. This paper contends that the promises of riches will prove to be less than hoped for.
