The energy relations between the EU and Africa. The need to redefine the new political and productive context (DIEEEO124-2014)

The European Union is the region with the highest degree of energy dependence due to its high consumption and production deficit. This results in high dependence on imports, which carries risks of insecurity in the supply and energy vulnerability because of the reduced number of countries from which it is supplied, the possible use of hydrocarbon as a political weapon or upheaval in production areas.
This situation has become topical following recent geopolitical events and has increased risk perception. Given this, it is necessary to diversify supply sources and consolidate a Common Energy Policy that strengthens the role of the European Union in the world and meets its needs.
To this end, it is essential to look at the emergence of new actors on the world stage of hydrocarbon production, specially Africa, with which the European Union has established areas of cooperation, and is presented as an enabling partner for reasons of proximity and cultural links, in common benefit and enjoyment for the 21st Century.
