Lies and realities of a political and humanitarian crisis (DIEEEO08-2016)

The present study analyzes a particular aspect of the illegal immigration toward the United States: the massive arrival of tens of thousands unaccompanied alien children and family units from the Central America Northern Triangle at the south frontier of the United States between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014; the humanitarian and political crisis it unchained and the responses both the U.S. Government and those of the Northern Triangle to stem and in last instance to put an end to such a surge. It also examines how the combination of push factors and pull factors produces a complex set of mixed causes, in which parents of those children play a key role since they are the start of a perilous journey that has ended in some cases in apprehension and deportation, and in others in a sea of uncertainty at the U.S. Immigration Courts. In spite its importance such factor is practically absent in most of the media and expert´s analysis that privilege violence and poverty as the main drivers, if not the most, of the influx of Central American migrants at the South Border of the U.S. After the 2014 surge the number of apprehended children has diminished, but it does not mean the influx has receded. The Mexican government through its Southern Border Program is now apprehending y deporting more Central American children and adults than the United States.
