The Third Review Conference of the Convention for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (DIEEEO47-2013)

The III Chemical Weapons Convention Review Conference has taken place in The Hague on April 8th-19th. The CWC entered into force in 1997. It is both a Treaty of disarmament and of non-proliferation, since Parties are committed to the destruction of stockpiled chemical weapons, and it also bans its production, stockpile and use. In the III Review Conference key issues for the international community have been adressed, such as the Syrian conflict and the OPCW role in strengthening peace and security, the goal of universality of the CWC, national implementation, industrial verification, and the contribution of the CWC to international efforts to prevent chemical terrorism. In the Conference, States Parties have tried to strike a balance among measures to improve the efficiency of the chemical non-proliferation regime to cope with present risks, and those designed to foster international cooperation.
