United Nations peacekeeping operations have become in the last two decades one of the most common mechanisms used by the Security Council in humanitarian emergencies, being considered as a measure of protection. The evolution from first operations deployed in Somalia or Yugoslavia to more recent ones in Sudan or Democratic Republic of the Congo is evident, particularly, regarding doctrine and capacities to offer humanitarian protection.However, there are still important problems when implementing a peace mission for humanitarian purposes, and they may be confronted through proposals for improvement.
