The New NATO’s Deterrence & Defence posture (DIEEEO28-2013)

This paper analyzes the New NATO’s Deterrence & Defence posture. Although the core of the NATO strategy still relies on deterrence through a mix of nuclear and conventional capabilities, new elements recently added could modify the delicate balance that such deterrence requires. Thus, after analyzing both the nuclear and the recently incorporated anti-ballistic missile defence capabilities, some of the contradictions arising from the whole package as well as other powers’ position, in particular Russia, are pointed out. As a conclusion, in line with the above, it is stressed the fact that when it comes to deterrence, external actors’ perceptions could be even more relevant than own postures, and in this case the new NATO might not be perceived as it mean to be.
