The consequences of the Syrian conflict: the collapse of the militant Islamism of ISIS (DIEEEA67-2017)

The evident deterioration of ISIS allows announcing its imminent collapse as a proto state, but it does not mean the end of violent Islamism in Syria and Iraq. A part of ISIS will be exfiltrated to areas where its location is difficult, waiting for a new opportunity to emerge. Hayat Tahrir al Sham, the affiliated group of Al-Qaeda, which has the Turkish aopy is already being diluted with the population of Idlib province.

On the other hand, the disappearance of the common enemy has revealed the depth of regional divisions and their potential for conflict at a regional level. In this context, the importance of the Kurdish nationalists in the fight against ISIS, and their intention to achieve their independence, or at least a broad autonomy in both Syria and Iraq, suggest that after the fall of ISIS, new conflicts could emerge.
