Since the crisis in the north of Mali, Mauritania has figured prominently in analysis that deal with the transnational dimension of the conflict. Mauritania, with an extensive border with the west and north of Mali, has had a prominent role in the fight against AQIM. The question is whether Mauritania is another fragile state that may allow the jihadists to benefit from the instability. Security wise, the situation is under control and amongst the population only a small minority support armed struggle. Thus, risk does not come from a potential jihadist invasion, but from a series of political, social, economic and ethnic conflicts that contradict the stability that the government boasts internally and abroad. This article will outline the main drivers of conflict in a country that is of key geostrategic importance for Spain.
