Opinion document: Foreign and Security Policy of the USA: The "Pax Americana" after Afghanistan

Since his accession to the White House, President Obama has implemented a security policy conditioned by the impositions of the economic crisis, and based on the pillars of limiting military intervention to cases in which vital interests are at stake; prioritizing the effort to certain areas of interest; relying more on partner capabilities in the rest; and of giving preference to multilateral action should intervention is deemed necessary. This document assesses that a change in the Presidency will not imply substantial variations to the current strategic approach. Europe has to monitor the evolution of a trend in security policy that seems to progressively decouple America and the Old Continent. The document concludes that, in spite of Obama´s policy having reopened the debate about the decline of the United States as a superpower, the 21st will likely continue to be an American century.
