The Arab revolts in Syria opened the door to the leadership of various Islamist actors evolving towards a bloody war with dramatic regional and global effects. In almost three years and a half of war Syria has become a bigger international concern in terms of globalized Jihadist battlefield than Afghanistan in the 1980s or Iraq in the 2000s. Jihadist actors on the ground are extremely violent, they feed both the intra-Muslim conflict between Shi’a and Sunni and instability in neighbouring Iraq, and they recruit militants elsewhere.
