Opinion document: Secession in International Law: The Case of Crimea

In this study we analyze the illegality of the referendum of self-determination in Crimea and the numerous violations of international law committed by Russia to occupy Crimea and encourage their annexation. Specifically, as regards the violation of Ukraine's territorial integrity, the use of force, occupation and interference in internal affairs. Also, we study the response of the international community through principal international organizations, with special mention of the EU and its difficulty to have a common foreign policy. Finally, it should differentiate Crimea for Kosovo, as models of secession contrary to international law.
