The cartoons in the service of the First World War (DIEEEO23-2015)

We live in a continuous changing world, in which globalization and immediate information needs rule society. Traditional mass media have been pushed out by Internet, social networks or, formerly, TV. In this context, governments – or any pressure group – have had to adapt themselves to maintain an info control that achieves the effect of influencing on society thinking and ideology; that is, that achieves information domain. Although 100 years ago, at the beginning of the Great War, media had a limited ability to penetrate, compared to present one, this did not preclude from their using with propaganda aims. One of these media was the graphic publications (comics, daily or periodical strips, cartoons or posters). This article studies its effect during the war and its real influence on society, if any existed. As a close example, nowadays, the publishing of some religious-based cartoons has had deep and terrible consequences all over the world.
