Recent presidential elections in the Republic of Chad: stabilization factor in the Sahel? (DIEEEO63-2016)

The latest presidential elections in the Republic of Chad have assured a fifth term for President Idriss Déby Inot. His firm commitment to support the security of the region and, especially, in the fight against terrorism they have contributed to the confidence and the support of many Western countries and of the African institutions. Nevertheless, the lack of democratic freedoms in the country and the poor management of the important revenues generated by oil exploitation in recent years, which have not resulted in a significant improvement of the serious level of underdevelopment of the population, could eventually become destabilizing factors in the country and thus in the entire Sahel region threatened by terrorism and organized crime.
