The externalization of borders in the European Union (DIEEEO80-2018)

The concept of the term “border” has evolved over time, accelerated by globalization and the emergence of transnational actors. Massive migration flows constitute a fundamental element of these changes, affecting regarding national rules, but having a significant influence outside their borders.

The European Union has become one of the main destinations for migrants. In order to control these incoming migratory flows, there are initiatives that transfer the migratory policies to third States, being part of the phenomena known as border externalization.
